Taking the Right English Language Assessments to Study Further in New Zealand

The recent amendments by New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) have changed the English language requirement in recent times.
As per the new ruling of (NZQA), the private tertiary education providers must abide by certain conditions for assessing English learning for international students to enroll the competent ones from or after March 1, 2013. The tertiary education providers in the country can have further conditions on English language after meeting the basic conditions. So, before taking up a course to study abroad in New Zealand, here are some quick facts about English language tests in New Zealand.

Approved English Language Test
Foreign students planning to study tertiary education in New Zealand can appear for the following English testing assessments, such as:

  • Cambridge International Standard Tests of English as Foreign Language – Included in this category are:
  1. CAE -- This test is conducted by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations under the name of Cambridge English Advanced (CAE). It is also known as the Certificate in Advanced English. To study tertiary education, the student must attain grade B or higher.
  2. CPE – Known as Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE), the test is organized from the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. The grade of B or above is a must for admission to tertiary education.  
  3. FCE -- The test is conducted by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and known as Cambridge English First or First Certificate in English (FCE). The students must attain grade B and more to study in colleges and universities.
  • IELTS -- The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is co-owned by British Council, Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. It is one of the prestigious and popular English language testing assessments available for international students to study abroad in New Zealand. To study tertiary education, a student must attain a score of 6.0. Universities can have their individual score rate as well. The score is valid for 2 years.
  • NZCEL – The students can also sit for New Zealand’s own benchmarking test, the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) that is listed on the NZQF. This assessment has been developed by NZQA. Students planning to take up courses, say Masters Degrees, must attain a Level 5 in this test. Level 4 is required for acquiring diplomas.  
  • TOEFL –The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is monitored from the US and checks the English language proficiency of international students. Students must attain 587 points to qualify for tertiary studies. The Test of Written English (TWE) score must be 4.5.

Changes Bring in Strict Parameters
The recent changes are not that lenient to those who don’t have strong command over English language. For instance, the earlier exemptions on countries which indicated English as the official language but did not have citizens with good command over the language have been lifted. This would mean that the students from these countries would need to appear for the aforesaid English testing assessments to study in New Zealand.
